Surging on acceleration and backfiring

Surging on acceleration and backfiring
Hoping someone has had this issue
my 94 F150 4x4 has developed a bad habit of backfiring that sounds like its in the plenum, but just briefly, While doing this it lacks acceleration, then all of a sudden it seems gas flow (or something) gets better and it really takes off. I was told it might be the coil, fuel Filtershave been changed. It's aggravating 5.0 with Auto transmission w/ overdrive. My next step was to test the fuel rail regulator
