stiff steering at low speeds (2006 Ford f-150)
I have a 2006 Ford f 150 lariat supercrew with 48k miles on it and recently been noticing hard steering at low speeds....what else can it be besides u-joints? THX guys

Have you eliminated the power steering system as a problem? I've had vehicles without power steering and at speed steering is easy but at low speeds it requires much more effort. So it could be your ps system not doing its job, low fluid, failing pump or something. My suggestion, check the cheapest first and ps fluid is cheap.

The p/s fluid is fine and I believe replacing the u-joint on the steering shaft would be the least expensive fix....I would think if it was the rack it would happen all the time and not intermittently?

If you can rev-up your motor when it's going this and it gets soft then it's in the pump, at low rpm the pump might not be able to pump sufficient fluid If that's the case I wouln't worry about it unless it gets worst.
