I have a 2014 5.0L
8 quarts of motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend plus a filter is over 50$ at the local store.
Dealership does oil changes for like 40 bucks and they use the same oil. I looked around online and couldn't find any lower prices on this oil.

So what's the deal with this? Does ford get that oil for 1$ per quart or something since they buy so much of it? Or is there a place I'm not aware of where I can buy this oil? I love DIY maintenance but if its cheaper to have someone else do it then I won't be changing my own oil anymore

What's yer local Wally-Mart selling the 5 quart jugs for? And the MC filter?
Check ye oil level - make certain they dint short you a qt, lol.

Two reasons I'll do it myself for almost every job.
1. I know it gets done to my satisfaction and I'll do an inspection of other components while at it.
2. I don't have to go through the "needed service" list the tech or service writer comes up with. You need yadda yadda yadda, and the trans and coolant flush that's on special this week.
3. (ok, there's a third) I don't have to go back and fix what they've been paid to do.

My dealer only charges $10 to do an oil change, but it's a pain in the *** having to drop the truck off all day for a 20 minute job, even with a so-called appointment. I've had them do it in the past, but I think I'm just going to start doing it myself again with Mobil 1 and the extended intervals. You can go to 10K on that stuff, right?

The dealer probably gets oil in 50 gallon drums and it is Motorcraft oil so they are paying a low price because that is wholesale price. It is nice to do it yourself and know its done right though.

Not to mention that the dealer is also rotating the tires, and topping off the other fluids for the same price.
Properly disposing of the used oil and filter is more difficult for the do it yourselfer anymore, that the convenience factor is favorable.
The service interval is also entered into the Ford database, so those will not be a factor should an engine warranty issue arise.

I have the dealer do it on both my trucks. They've got a package deal, The Works, I think it's called. Includes tire rotation, a cursory inspection, and best of all, no need to dispose of used oil, and the mess to clean up. Plus, even though it may take a couple hours or so, it gives me a chance to BS with my salesman, and some of the other guys there, and gives me a little down time. Very much worth the $50 or so cost. And, if I need to do other things, I get a loaner, and a rudimentary car wash. It's all win in my book.
