Default rear axel seepage

Please forgive my lack of correc technical terms, but my 06 xlt 2wd 5.4 's rear axel is showing oil or fluid seeping from both sides of the round middle case. New axel casing? thank you!

I assume you mean its leaking where the axle tubes are pressed into the center section. some seepage is normal and if its just enough to colect a little dust I wouldnt worry if its dripping check your axle vent tube and also the oil level it might be over full. And if its sevier the its time to look for another housing. bubbabud

Power wash it. let it dri, look at it closely with a flashlight, if it is definitely coming from a gasket, just replace the gasket. If it is coming from the pumpkin pinion seal, replace it. If it is coming from the axle tubes to pumpkin area get another if you can't seal it with some Pro Seal RTV Silicone. Sometimes parking downhill can help you spot a pinion shaft seal leak from the differential. Good time to service it anyway.

Hi, I'm having seepage from the rear diff pinion seal. Does replacing this require any specialty tools or can someone with basic tools and common sense do this ? Shawn k

The seal replacement is simple, just remove the drive shaft, remove the big nut and pop out the seal. The part about putting the right preload on the pinion bearing is a little harder puting it back together. Too much load and the bearings fail and the axle makes a lot of noise, too little and the seal leaks and the axle fails and a lot of noise.

Yes to what Bubba said. Do check the axle vent. However I have never seen a problem with the vent. Do remove the axle fill plug and check the level (if the vent is plugged you should hear some pressure being relieved). If the vent is plugged/restricted oil should also escape through the seals at the end of the axles. This would be much worse than a small leak at the pinion seal. A leak at the end of the axles could result in your rear brakes not doing anything when trying to stop.
