Rear End Clank Noise

Rear End Clank Noise
When towing my boat and coming to a stop I feel a movement coming from the rear of the truck (2006 F-150) and it feels like something slides forward slightly. When I accelerate "it" slides back and if I accelerate quickly, "it" makes a loud clank noise. I have ruled out hitch, receiver, ball, anything from the boat/trailer etc... It is coming from the transfer case/ spare tire area under the truck and it only appears to do it while towing the boat. Any thoughts on this?

I know you said you have ruled out the Trailer but if the trailer has surge brakes you can feel it shudder thru the whole drive train if there is air in the surge system. If that isnt it I would lean twords looking at the mounts for the Transfercase as more torque might make it flex and hit something under the truck Hope that helps

So I am building my mechanical knowledge as I go here and I have incorrectly been referring to my rear differential as the transfer case. The noise has been coming from the rear differential area. I jacked up my truck, put it in neutral and there was about .5 - .75" of rotation in one tire before the other tire began to rotate. Am I correct in saying that the differential is bad or needs service? Any idea to what degree of repair is typical for this scenario?
