rear differential (see picture)
hey folks, I have what appears to be a leak! it doesn't leave any spots on the driveway yet, but I need to get it fixed. does anyone know what parts I will need and possibly some instructions? it is an 06 f150 4x4, 4.6 V8.

Not much of a leak. The only fix is pulling the drive shaft and replacing the pinion seal. I'd leave it alone until it reaches the bottom of the diff cover. Check the fluid level just to be sure. That's always a good idea anyway.

Mine's in shop right now having that pinion seal replaced. I went to YouTube to see about it, sure enough, about a 30 minute job if ye have a seal puller thingamajig. I'd do it myself if I was a few years younger with no fibromyalgia mess. Love doing me own work...
I say go ahead and get'er done.

Pinion seal leaking.
Best leave it to dealership service dept.
Getting the torque on the pinion nut with the correct preload is a PITA. If you do it wrong you have to pull it all apart, get another crush sleve and start again. My Mach 1 has the same leak right now and when I am ready to get it fixed I will be bringing it to the dealer. I swapped out my shortblock in my garage but I'm not fooling with my rear end.

It's most likely the seal, but make sure the axle vent isn't plugged.
