Default Oil change dilemma

Just bought a 2003 F150 4x4 and its time to change oil. Previous owner always used 15/40 Rotella diesel oil in it. Wondering if I should start using what's recommended or keep on with Rotella. It has 91,000 miles and seems to be doing ok with what's been used.

Default wtf

I would have the dealer check it out first to make sure everything is sound and use what is recommended that's a heavy oil for a f150

from experience in vdubs, tolerances being millimeters in an engine between happy and broken. Even a slightly heavier viscosity can be harmful. Having said that, the theory is once its used, its not always a good idea to switch back. Using a heavier oil is a great way to hide engine problems. I have gone 300 pages or so in the short time I have been on the board, and the consensus seems to be to use OEM suggestion 9 times out of 10. we dont even use that heavy an oil in our diesel izuzu nprs at work...

Gonna have to have someone check it over. The original owners other truck has over 250k on it. Did a google on diesel oil in gas engine trucks and cars and you'd be surprised how many swear by it. Just don't know

Sounds like extra start up wear especially in the winter

Default Oil change ?

At this point you should look into if the Rotella is a detergent oil or not. If it is not do not put a detergent oil in it (ie. Castrol) use a non detergent (ie. Penzoil) mixing the different ones will cause you big problems.

It is a detergent oil, so would it be ok to use a regular detergent oil, a 5/20 synthetic blend maybe

Default Lol

The detergent/ non detergent argument is so invalid just change it to the weight it is supposed to have and forget about it there are people who change different brands of oil every time they change or "custom blend" multiple oils and addetives and don't have any problems in their 300k miles

I didn't even know they still made non detergent oil. Anyway, I'd definitely go with wha' Ford says, 5w-20. Canno' go wrong with MotorCraft. It's synthetic blend, unless they are now making it full synthetic for newer trucks.

They do make full synthetic but it's just like finding a unicorn with wings lol. I'm using royal purple since walmart had it on clearance. just stick with the major brands and you will be just fine
