New truck Oil question
Hi all,
Just got a 2016 f150 XL 3.5L V6. Manual says to use 5w30 Premium Synth blend. For those of you that have had a ford for a while, should I stick with that? Or should I use something else?
Also, what brands do you prefer for oil/filter.
Thanks!

Beer, Boats, and Trucks.
I like to stick to the oil specified in the manual. Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic with a motorcraft filter every 5k cause that's what I like.

OMG, not another oil thread...

Here are the answers you will receive:
Oil - Use what Ford says. Or, use _____ because it's made by the same people. Or, use ____ because it's made by a multilevel-marketing company (not it's not...) and they are the best. Or, go to www.bobstheoilguy.com and bore yourself with analysis that in the end tells you to use what Ford says.
Filter - Use Motorcraft, it's the best, it has doo-dads and whatchmacolics in it to make the oil not drain back. Or, never use ___ because it's made out of rat feeces. Or, I only use ____, because my daddy used ___ and his daddy used ____ and his daddy used _____.
Frequency of Change - Follow the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor. Or, change it every 3,000/5,000/7,000/____ miles. Or, change it before you get home from buying the truck. Or, my daddy always changed it every ___ and his daddy before him and his daddy before him....

Lots of opinions to be had on this subject, but I'm just going to leave this here...
We have put around 400,000 miles on 6 different Fords over the last 30 years between the wife and I.
No engine failures, or known oil related issues.
Motorcraft filters and name brand oil of the weight specified in the vehicle owners manuals.
The one exception was my 97 F150 4.6L.
There was a Ford TSB some years ago recommending use of 5W20 oil in certain vehicles that were originally specified to use 5W30.
Shortly after I got the 97 F150 in 2008, we also bought a 2001 Windstar. The 3.8L V6 specified 5W20, so after finding the TSB, I began using 5W20 in the F150 as well.
The F150 had 80K miles on it when I got it and it's got 205K now. 125K miles on a well broken in motor on 5W20 oil with no issues.
Motorcraft Synthetic Blend oil and Motorcraft filters are reasonably and usually competitively priced at Walmart, so that's what I have used.
The Motorcraft filters have been favorably reviewed, and have the silicone anti-drainback valves that the Ford motors (particularly the 4.6 & 5.4 Modular motors) need.
The Motorcraft Synblend oil has also been well reviewed.
Any oil that meets the API grade recommended in the manual will be acceptable.
Personal preference is for well known name brands over store brands, but I have used the Walmart "Supertech" store brand full synthetic more than a few times when they were out of Motorcraft Oil.
As for change interval, the only way to truly get the full life out of your oil is by setting your change interval based on lab analysis of the oil.
I have changed my oil religiously at 3000 miles for years in my older vehicles, but the wife's 2008 Taurus X, and my new to me 2013 F150 both have oil life monitors, so on those vehicles I will be changing when the monitor says, or somewhere in the vicinity of 5000 miles on them.
Long story short, use good quality oil of the specified grade with a good quality filter and change at specified interval.

Mine was 9,100 in first year. For year two, I reset it at a year because mileage was so low, and just changed it at just under 6,000 miles at a year and a half.
