Disagree with the weight of the oil, have been told by Ford to use the 5W20. The top end goes out if a thicker oil is used. Do the research, and you will see most guys use the recommended oil and have tons of miles on there engines. My 02 4.2 has 192K. Don't believe this crap about the heat thinning down the oil, I'm in the desert and 115 degrees is not an issue. I go 5000 miles on oil changes and just down to the add 1 qt mark.

just out of curiosity, but it seems to me that it would take a few minutes for oil pressure to build enough to reach the heads, hence why after a short period the knock goes away..
just my 2 cents

^ member, exactly, the closer tolerances of the engine requires the thinner oil. These engines are not built to the same specs as years back, are we not getting more mile on these trucks? Its nothing to get 200K nowadays, 50 years ago or less, 100K and its throw away.

i got a buddy that has a 97 mustang cobra and it does that despite having new lifters put in, the new lifters got less than a couple thousand miles on them. but after a minute it quits doing it. maybe they just need adjusted. its really hard to say what could make them do that. its probly like proudfordowner said and it just takes the motor a minute to build up pressure when its cold

Are you using the oil filter with the S at the end of the part #? S stands for silicone check valve. The valve holds the oil from draining back to the pan every night to eliminate oil starvation to the lifters.
