Default Help, 02 5.4L Power Steering Pump

My truck started to make a siren/chainsaw noise. The line from the top reservoir is all gummed up and nasty. The fluid level was low so more was added to bring it up to just over the mid hash mark. The noise quieted down a lot, but was still there. A few days go by, the level dropped to just above the low hash mark. The truck was just sitting there the whole time.

I got a Haynes Repair Manual, and a friend and I were going to try and change out the pump and line. We have never done this repair before, but know generally what to do. I got some stands, pulley puller/installer, wrenches, PB Blaster, and some sockets. Just some basic stuff.

Pump Removal Steps

1. Remove the fan, shroud, and drivebelt
2. Remove power steering pump pulley
3. Remove the three reservoir bolts
4. drain and plug the system
5. Remove two upper bolts from pump
6. Raise and jack
7. Remove skidplate
8. Unplug the electrical connector from the EVO
9. Remove the last bolt from the underside of the pump
10. lower truck
11. remove pump
12. disconnect hoses

Installation is in reverse. Use proper torque on bolts, Teflon seal on the new hose ends. Afterwards, bleed the system for air.

The part that has me concerned is the fan and shroud removal. The thing has it’s own step by step process to get it out. You have to remove the clean air assembly, drain the coolant, remove the upper radiator hose, and remove the degas bottle. It also say the fan needs a special set of wrenches to get it off.

Do I really need to remove the fan and shroud to change out this pump? Any tips or tricks?

I never remove them, but I was strictly a Ford tech for a while. The biggest tip I can give you is to remove what you need to, too make the process easier. The pump is easy to get too, just make sure you have plenty of drop pans cause it can be messy. When you go to bleed the system have someone watch pour it in and watch the level cause it will bubble a lot. Also jack the front tires off the ground a little. Makes the bleeding process quicker and easier. Also. If you can buy a pump with the pulley already on you will save a bunch of time.

Ok, I am working on removing a 2004 Ford F-150 4X4 5.4L Triton engine, and I found, to make it easiest to remove the shroud and water pump pulley, first remove the air induct stuff(All plastic stuff, obviously.), then remove the 4 bolts, that hold the plastic fan to the fan clutch(They will be on the backside of the fan, the heads facing the engine, for easier maneuverability.), then remove the 4 small bolts from the fan pulley, and make sure you have a longer bolt, that is same thread and size(Will be a metric thread.), and then remove the pulley just to the left and a bit higher then the fan pulley, so you have a near bolt hole(Will be same thread and will be metric, as fan bolts.), then grab 2 bolts that fit, and washers, and a short chain, that will go from the 1 bolt hole of the 4 fan bolt holes, and where the pulley you just removed, and run the bolts in, as far as you can, and the chain will stop the pulley and etc, from spinning, and put the wrench(I used an adjustable wrench, since it was larger then the wrenches I had to work with, and I made sure it was tight on the hex of the "nut", of the fan clutch backside.), then if you are removing from the same type of engine, you will put the wrench at roughly 90 degrees of the ground, and you will most likely pull towards the passenger side of the truck(Right-hand thread, and for left-hand thread, you pull to the opposite, obviously, but normally it will be right-hand.), and once you break it loose, some will be a bit hard to pop loose, some will be easy, just keep the chain hooked up, and turn the fan clutch off, and you will have a ton of room to work with, and there will be, if I remember correctly, 4 short bolts(Maybe just 2, kinda tired here...lol), that will let the shroud fall off the radiator, and then gotta remove the radiator hose(Obviously drain the coolant system, as well.), and just slowly pull the shroud up out, and make sure not to flop the radiator fins over, they can be a pain to flop back over, and VERY time consuming, and that is it, you can remove the 2 bolts, that you bolted the chain down with, and then replace the pulley, that you removed, to use the bolt hole, and its much easier to deal with! And I went on "youtube", to see how to remove the water pulley, and I ran across that lil tip, and trust me, it makes a HUGE difference, and much easier!

Ohhh, I am also a professional engine specialist(Since 1995-1996), I have built prototype racing engines, as well as so much more, but normally I do not remove the engines, so, a bit new to me, since, never removed one of these before.
