Power Steering causing RPM drop
Hey,
I have been looking at the forums here for a couple months and now that I just bought my own f150, I figured it was time to sign up, and especially considering I had a question.
My old ford ranger never had this problem, although Im not sure if it translates. Essentially, when stopped and idling, if I turn the wheel I can notice a 200 hundred or so drop in RPMs while the power steering pump is active, when I let go of the wheel it increases in RPMs to what it was before.
Is this normal for a full size pickup because of weight and such? Or should I be looking into another power steering pump?
Vehicle in question is a 1994 F150 4X4 5SPD 5.0L EFI

Welcome to the site!
Not much experience with this problem, but noticed that one of the components of the KOER (key on - engine running) diagnostic test is to quickly turn the steering wheel to test for the power steering pressure switch. http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/?p=94
Perhaps run this test to validate that the switch is functioning. I don't experience this RPM drop with the power steering, so suggest your experience is not normal.
Good luck, and keep us posted!
