Default Heat,and possible short

I have a 1988 F-150,2wd,4.9 6cyl.,with a/t. After driving it for about 100 miles or so,the engine will start to buck, and then shut down. After opening up the hood, the positive battery post is very hot to the touch, and the solenoid that is mounted on the inside fender well,is also very hot to the touch. The coolant seems to be fine, and the temp gauge runs in the normal range. The volt meter also goes to to the left when this happens. After letting it cool down for a while,I am able to start it,and drive it with no problems, until it happens again. Any thoughts on this problem would be appreciated. Thanks.
