Default Gas gauge wacky

After starting my 2010 F150 4X4 Lariat yesterday, I watched my gas gauge drop significantly as I drove down the rode. By the time I reached my destination 5 miles away the low fuel light had come on and by the time i pulled into driveway the gauge read empty and the truck shut off. I restarted the truck and the gauge read a 1/4 tank and it was fine. Any ideas???

Welcome to the site.

Do you park on an incline? If so, this normal and has been discussed many times.

Yes, so this is normal? Or do I have an issue that I need to address? What's the fix?

happens to me all the time. if you park facing downhill, it reads empty, but if you face uphill it will read full.
I just make sure that when I have 1/4 tank or less, I dont park facing downhill!

Im not really concerned what it reads when it's parked, my issue was the gas gauge was dropping rather quickly while I was driving, eventually reading empty which caused the truck to shut off.

Thats never happened to me... Ive seen it change but never to the point my truck shut off. How low were you at the time? Id say just try not to go below half if youre parking on hills like that

Found out the hard way last week, parked facing downhill and the truck would not start.
Roadside assistance to the rescue.

Might sound obvious, but monitor the situation. Doesn't sound like parking up or down facing has anything to do with it. Could be a pump or possibly the regulator?

If that happens, get out of the truck and look at the tank. Hopefully it is not sucking in on itself. Sometimes the evap purge valve goes bad, the tank can't equalize pressure, and it sucks in. Then the fuel sender reads wacky. Get out and equalize the pressure with the little plastic funnel under the seat.
