Default You could have the problematic throttle body 3L

I had problems and changed the tps first . Found out there is a newer throttle body 8L . These throttle bodies have a circuit card on the motor assembly that decodes the pulses from the ecm , which makes them complicated , they sit up there with the engine heat and electronics don't like heat . I got the new one on ebay for 200 with a new tps on it .
The number is on the throttle body and is an easy change out .
I would also be looking for a vacuum leak , you may need to have them put it on a smoke machine or make your own homemade one , check it out on you tube .

Did this fix your hesitation issue?

I took mine in because of this issue. Replaced plugs with no success. In fact after getting it back I now have an exhaust/fuel smell in the cab when not in motion. Still hesitating.

Put all new coils in...NOT fixed
Put all new injectors in...NOT fixed
Put new fuel filter in...NOT fixed

I reached out yesterday to another member of this forum that said he took his in and they found one of the Catalytic converters to be bad. That solved his issue apparently. He has not responded to my PM.

I am highly considering this option due to the odor of fuel/exhaust that has accompanied the spark plug change. Thinking maybe this is the source of both problems.
I had one problem after another with my truck. Long story short, I ended up getting a brand new motor installed. That made all the problems go away! After having the new motor in for less than 2 months, I got in a really bad accident and totaled the truck. Went off a bridge at 70mph after hitting some black ice. Rolled the truck and smashed everything up real good. Luckily I walked away with just whiplash, the truck was another story. The insurance only gave me $800 for the new motor even though I had receipts from the shop that installed it and the dealer I bought it from that totaled over $5k. I now have a Dodge Ram Hemi and it's been a great truck for me. I will never buy another F150 as long as I live. I had more issues with that truck than any vehicle I've owned. In the time I owned that truck and when I wrecked it, I had over $11k in repairs and that was all within a 1 year time period. I take extremely good care of any vehicle I own, this one just must have been beaten on prior to me getting it.

OUCH! That is not good! Good to hear you made it through with little injury.

The thought has just recently crossed my mind (of getting a new one). But at the same time I bought this one new in 05 and its just been the last few months have I started to have problems with it. So for 10+years its done well.

None the less I am extremely frustrated!!!!

I had a similar problem last year - replaced all spark plugs with Motorcraft's and it fixed the issue. This past weekend, I was out of town and the motor started to jerk violently while pressing on the gas and at low idle it would shake. Truck was not throwing a code at all - I ran a diagnostic on my Gryphon and it showed a miss in Cylinder #2. Replaced the Coil Pack and its back to normal. $40 fix - luckily it was Cylinder #2 though, was easy to reach with the socket. Thinking of replacing all Coil Packs sometime soon to eliminate that issue from coming up again.

Well back at it again. Took it to the shop to see if the mechanic could find the exhaust leak and the fish bite issue. He couldn't smell the leak?? Which I find is puzzling. Because he admitted to smelling it at one point. But now can't. Its pretty obvious...

Anyway he couldn't replicate the "fish bite" around the 40-50mph range @ 1000-1500rpm either.

So here I sit doing more and more research.

Has any one here found a solution to either of these problems?

Thanks.

BTW. I don't believe the "fish bite" issue is fuel related. It seems to me its either transmission or has to do with the overdrive. But I'm no mechanic.

Exactly.... Had my truck for a year with about 100k on it... Fish bite is the exact description. I don't think it is a tranny issue. OD off creates no problems, but still no solutions on sites that I have searched and all other forums. Has anyone heard of an accurate fix? Plugs done, coil boots etc.... K and N filter cleaned and good to go. hmmm.

Cecil,
As far as I can tell it was a coil itself. I replaced all plugs and injectors, but still had the problem. Ended up replacing all coils and so far so good. Never got a code. frustrating because I have no idea which was causing the issue. I did however add some conductive grease to each spring in the new coils. Hope this helps.

I was experiencing the stutter myself for the past months and thought it was my transmission. It turned out NOT to be anything related to the transmission whatsoever!! The stuttering was caused by misfiring spark plugs when the highest gear is engaged and when under load (hill) and when throttle was applied minimally. Basically the "40 mph" thing. At around 40 the last gear shifts in (not the overdrive) and the rpms go down to about 1200, at least it does for my F150 Supercrew. Then if you apply a little throttle... . PUNG PUNG PUNG!! ... the stuttering happens. If you give it more gas the stuttering stops. There is no engine light.

I took my truck into the Ford dealer this morning telling them about my suspicions that it was NOT the tranny and they should focus their search on the engine, the plugs and coils. I just got the call and they said I was right on the money and they saw misfiring happening on their measurement equipment. Turns out they did not see any coil issues although I know for some people one or more coils can be bad as well. I thought for sure it would be a new transmission but thankfully it wasn't because those repairs or replacements can be much more expensive. They are replacing the plugs, wires and doing an induction service which cleans the carbon out. They said this sort of tune up is due around 100k anyway and my truck is at 93K right now.

BTW, make sure whoever does the work that they know about the plugs breaking issue on 5.4L 3-valve engines. Apparently plugs can break during removal on this engine type. This Ford dealer knew about it and they apparently have a written procedure to remove the plugs without damage.
