engine dies on hot days w/gas smell
I've recently started having a problem with my F150 (160,000 miles) while hauling heavy loads on hot days. While driving I start smelling gas and if I keep working the engine, it will die and will not restart until it sits for about 10 min. This only happens with heavy loads on hot days (80 degrees+). Doesn't happen with heavy loads on cold days. With moderate loads on hot days I might smell some gas but it doesn't die.
Someone suggested replacing the carbon canister but I'm a bit skeptical. I could understand why a bad carbon canister would cause a gas smell, but why would that make the engine die? I don't have the money to start replacing random parts, so I'd like to figure this out a little further first. Anyone experience this or have suggestions?

If it's a carbureted motor it could be vapor lock (hot intake manifold vaporizing the fuel) if so it may need a new insulator plate between the carb and the manifold
