04 FX4 5.4 VCT Stuck?
Just bought a used 04 with 110000mi. Drove it about 300mi. before paying. Ran great. Seven days after paying, SES light came on. Still ran great, but idled a little rough. Carried it to mechanic that worked for Used car Dealer. Codes PO171,PO175. He couldn't find anything. Reset, drove about 10mi. light. Carried to Ford Dealer for Computer check. Codes, PO171, PO305. He couldn't find anything. Said he called Ford Hot line. Followed their steps and says VCT on both sides stuck at 5/7 at idle. Should be closer to 0. Blames sludge in engine. Recomends, NEW ENGINE, or the cam phaser route.
Oil was changed just before I bought truck, came out OK (5-W20) Changed again right after SES light came on. Came out looking like when it went in. Went back with Synthetic 5-W20.
Don't buy the sludge story. Truck still runs like a scalded dog, just idles a little rough. HELP
