Default Drivetrain Whine in Four-Wheel Drive A

Due to recent unseasonably cold weather here in Western Oregon I put my truck in 4-Wheel Auto and noticed immediately a slight whine and seemed like the motor worked a little more, not like a huge drag, just felt a slight difference.

I understand this likely is turning more stuff, but thought mostly this just applied more traction control should the rear tires loose traction, then the vehicle goes into auto 4-Wheel.

When I switch back out of 4-Wheel Auto the noise stops, switch back into 4-Wheel Auto and the noise returns. As stated, the whine is very slight but it is there. Any thoughts, should I have this checked or is this normal?
