Clay bar doesn't really "wear out" - it gets dirty from all the contaminants it takes off of your paint. If you see it's starting to discolor from the dirt, it's time to replace it. What I usually do is hold onto my old clay and use it on chrome (NOT chrome plated plastic) and use the new stuff on my paint.
Oh - and another important tip. Mister Miagi of Karate Kid fame was full of poo. "Wax on" should not be in a circle. You should go in a line, front to back of vehicle where ever possible. This way if you do still have a contaminant that might scratch it will be less visible than the dreaded "swirls".

Generally I use Zaino Bros products. I have been very happy with them, however over time I have found I care less and less so I use just their soap (do not use Dawn unless you plan to strip everything off the paint and apply new layers of protection) and their QD (Quick Detailer) in between washings. Oh, and microfiber towels only.
First picture is a dime placed on a freshly Zaino'd BMW. Look how it slid off where it was originally placed (clay bar does that), and look at how incredibly small the water beads up on the surface! Dime was used for size comparison purposes. Second pic is a freshly Zaino'd Tacoma, see how well it reflects the neighborhood!
