That's a lot of damage for 5mph regardless of what he hit, or how he hit it, to me anyway. But freaky **** can happen, I guess.

I know it sound like I'm lying about the speed but it's how ever fast you can get rolling in about 7feet with minimal acceleration. I purchased the truck in 2011 with 27,000 miles on it. The truck is an 2008, the only thing I could think of is that there has been a previous stress to the axle in the same spot. Because I am having a hard time believing that the axle would be that fragile.

If it was in fact a 5mph impact it would absolutely bring the strength of the truck into question. The axle and rim in particular.

I live in Minnesota, Land of the massive pothole and there's is simply no way you break a chunk that size out of an OEM Ford wheel at 5mph regardless of what you hit.

I suppose maybe if something got wedged between the tire and rim you might be able to damage the wheel but I'd still be surprised.

Sorry but his impact is way different then any pothole. In a pot hole you have the suspension and the give of the tire itself to soak up the impact. In this instance he didn't have any of that.

Imagine smacking the same sized steel tube with a large rubber mallet at 5mph. It wont do much if anything.

Now imagine hitting it with a sledge hammer of the same weight. It's probably going to put a visible ding in it.

Finally imagine the sledgehammer weighing the same as the truck.

There may or may not have been previous damage but I personally don't have a problem seeing this happen.
