Availability of Mercon V ATF and 5-20 synthetic motor oil
Hey, is anyone out there having trouble buying engine oil and ATF out there?
My 04 F150 is due for its 30k mile service (oil/tranny fluid and filter) and I was trying to find the Mercon V ATF and 5-20 synthetic oil.... holy !!!
I first went to Wally-World (aka wal-mart) because it says in the back of my owners manual that wally world carries Motorcraft fluids and filters. So i get to the automotive section and its absolutely bare of all of the Mercon V ATF and all of the motorcraft 5-20 synthetic! So i said screw this and went 5 or 10 miles down the road to Advanced Auto... same deal there! No mercon v or 5-20. I then went to Napa and they didnt carry any motorcraft stuff.
Finally I wound up buying Valvoline Syn-Power. It should be OK to use because it says it meets the Ford standard and the API standard for 5-20 weight oils. I wound up getting a Napa gold oil filter as well...its a smaller micron filter than motorcrafts, so that should be OK there as well. As for the Mercon V ATF, the only atf I found that met the both the Ford standard and the API standard for Mercon V was Valvoline Max Life ATF. So i settled for that...
Does anyone else have that kind of trouble? The stealership has like a 15% markup on their parts, or I would've gone there. My dad is an AmsOil dealer... I think im gonna have him order all my fluids from now on and just switch to AmsOil!
Just wondering if anyone else has been having that kind of trouble.

I used the Mobil 1 syn ATF. It didn't say it Mecron V on the front but on the back it said it was compatible. The last time I found Castrol Mecron V at Wal Mart it was on clearance.

Anyone use AmsOil?
I think i said in my initial post that I was thinking of going to AmsOil for all my fluids and filters.... Does anyone out there use AmsOil products? Especially the oil filters, air filters, engine oil, and ATF. And, if you do, do you like it? And how does the oil sampling stuff work? Any info would be appreciated.

Well, Actually I'm an AMSOIL dealer. I would never use any other lubricants in my vehicles. I'm kinda biased so
I use it in my Harley, Lawnmower, trimmers, car, chainsaw, leafblower, and most importanly MY TRUCK!
5w20 oil is not that big of a deal. You could use a 5w30 or 0w30 with no problems at all.
And all of the EC2 amsoil filters are GREAT. I just got my truck about 2 weeks ago and I'm ordering some filters for it.
Amsoil ATF is also great. I have a friend of mine who is a Taxi driver, He has a 99 chevy 3500 van with 452,000 miles on it, Been on Amsoil since new and still doesnt use a drop of oil. With the original Engine, Trans, and Axles!!!
The Gear Lube is the most impressive though, I gained 1 mpg after changing the gear lube on my old 03 dodge ram to amsoil.
And as far as the sampling works. Just take a small sample out of your oil after about 8 or 9k miles and send it to Amsoil, They will send an analysis report back to you telling you EXACTLY what is in your oil such as carbon and wear metals. They can pinpoint almost to a T what is wearing in your engine just by checkin out the oil. They can then tell you that your oil is OK to go another 8-9k or tell you that you should change it if its bad.
I've seen an oil analysis come back after 40,000 miles and it was still GOOD!! But they recommended changing it due to the fact that the oil has been in the car for over 1.5years
