94 302 engine changes tone after running fine.code 998comes up,what to do now ??? Any ideas.

I believe this is a code for the "shift solenoid" in the transmission. The motor speed variation is a result, in part, of information sent from this solenoid to the PCM, adjusting the idle. I'd have a shop look at it. Good luck
