I have a 97 F150 4x4 4.6. Has a 5 speed trans and manual transfer case lever. Anyway while driving it today the truck just quit pulling itself. I assumed either a drive haft or rear end or a possible clutch or bad trans. Anyway I put the truck in 4wd to get it back home and it drove fine. Has a problem getting iylt out of 4wd but finally did and low and behold the truck drove fine. Then about 3 miles later the same thing truck quit moving and had to use 4wd to get it to drive. Does anyone have any ideas ?

Hmm, if the Tranny had issue it wouldn't move the front end sounds like a bad rear Differential. I'd drain it or remove the cover and check for broken bits.
