Default 4X4 Not working

2003 F-150 Supercrew 4X4 Lariet.
When 4x4 switch is turned on, I can hear a click in the dash and the light comes on but truck is not in 4wd. Any suggestions?

Could be the bump stop inside the shift motor. If it's split, it will allow the motor to turn past the contact points and get stuck. You can R&R the motor (I did mine last summer)and replace the rubber stop or get a new motor. They run about $300 to $400. Good luck
