Default so the Ac clutch bearing is bad

So I took this into a shop they say the compressor is probably shot but they cant tell because the ac clutch doesnt want to spin the bearings are shot, it needs to be replaced it is causing issues with the pulley spinning and will eat up the belt and should'nt be driven.

I suggested cant we just replace the ac clutch pulley? They said yes but that will need the freon replaced when they do it. Does that make sense? How hard is it to replace that pulley. They want to charge me $500 which seems excessive?

How hard is it to replace that pulley?

If they say the compressor is probably shot, then you probably need a new compressor and to have your lines flushed of debris caused by the failed compressor. Here are your options and possible outcomes.

Option 1: Replace the clutch (i.e. the pulley, it's one assembly).
Possible outcome 1: It works fine.
Possible outcome 2: Debris in the lines from the failed compressor don't allow the pulley to work anyway, it seizes and breaks.

Option 2: Replace the whole thing, compressor and pulley. Get the lines flushed and refilled.
Outcome: New everything. As long as there's no leak, it works.

Clearly you can see what I would do (and actually did to my truck myself)...

Default issue

Well my issue is I cant afford 1600 right now to replace everything.

What can I do to make it drive able? Just replace the pulley?

Easy... get a belt for an engine that doesn't have A/C and bypass the pulley entirely.

(it's always a good idea to have one or two of those on hand exactly for problems like this)

I just checked all three engines - the 4.2L, 4.6L, and 5.4L. All three have belts on the market for no A/C.

You might have to give it a minute to load the catalog.
