Default 2006 Making a dragging/hissing sound

My buddies 2006 V6 4x4 was making a loud sound that almost sounded like something was dragging underneath or a tire was spitting air out the sidewall. I was doing about 60mph when it happened and it was accompanied by a loss of power. It felt like I was driving into the wind. As I pulled over to see what was going on it downshifted with a loud slam and everything went back to normal and it drove fine the rest of the day. From what he's telling me he's been hearing the noise off and on for a while but it's getting worse and now the slam when downshifting has started. Any ideas? Has anyone ran into a similar problem. Not real familiar with Fords but I'm thinking Transmission or differental. Thanks!!

I think this could be the IWE solenoid. This happened with my 2006 FX4 5.4LV8 and that ended up being the culprit.

Yup, look into that solenoid and then your 4x4 actuators. Had a lot of problems with those. Mine ended up being vac lines that werent placed right. Start with the solenoid and then move to the wheels. Bad wheel bearing can also cause enough of a wobble that you wont feel it but it will start to mess with those vac lines.
