2006 5.4L engine nightmare (misfire, RPM spiking with no power)
I took my '06 5.4L into the dealer with a code for misfiring #2 cylinder. The symptoms were the classic stutter in the acceleration and a general loss of power. To make a very long story very short, I spent $4400 with the "experts" at the dealership (new spark plugs, boots, and wires all around, plus a new coil pack on the misfiring #2 cylinder. New fuel pump and filter. Changed out the cam phasers. Also did several flushes of the system to remove "sludge" found during the cam phaser job). On the back end of all that work and money, now the engine rpm will spike as the motor simultaneously loses all apparent power. There is also a noticeable vibration in the motor from idle all the way through to the misfire/loss odd of power. Please advise!

Take it back to whoever did all that work and have them make it right !

Wow... agreed with Mark, bring that back there with those symptoms. For $4400 you could've bought a rebuilt engine (not installation, but still...), you don't need these problems. Have you pulled codes?

I think it's just an issue of general incompetence at the dealership I took it to. I'm not letting them touch it any more, and trust me I've spoken to lawyers about what I'm allowed to do from a legal stand point as a consumer. No dice
The original code was just for the #2 cylinder misfire. (P0302?) No codes now for the new symptoms

Okay, so you don't want to go back to the dealership. What's your goal now? Get advice here and work on it yourself?

It's basically worthless the way it sits now, so I figure I might as well try my hand at fixing it. I can turn a wrench and read so I probably won't be able to do any worse than the part swapping "mechanics" at the dealership. That being said I am in no way qualified to open up the engine or anything, so I guess I'm just looking for any reasonable solutions anyone out there can think of. I bought a cheapo car on craigslist that's getting the job done for now

Cool, so moving forward - change ALL your coils. Start there.

If I had paid $4400 in repair cost and it still was not running correctly, I would be at that shop everyday till it was correct.
