2003 4x4 won't engage
A real quick disclaimer, my truck is used to solely for work. Because of this, I have an extreme lack of knowledge (except for the basics) regarding it, especially the 4x4 system. Anyways, let's get started:
The other day a friend of mine called and asked if I could tow out a truck, since mine has a 4x4. I said fine, and went over. Upon connecting the two trucks, we tried 2 - wheel first and that didn't work. So, I tried to engage my 4x4 system, but it did not work. I believe I have the manual transfer case (it's the one on the floor mat). Upon trying to shift, it would not respond or move, and it was extremely hard to move (other than to the left position). I have a 2003 F150, I believe that my engine is the 4.6l V8 model and the transmission is the automatic. I'm going to go to the Ford dealership today to ask "how" to engage the 4x4 (since I don't want to immediately shovel out money). However, if anyone here has the knowledge as to what may be the problem then that would be extremely helpful before I pay the dealership. Thank you for your time guys.

It should shift into 4High while in gear, but to get into 4Low, it helps to put the 4WD shifter into neutral and then shift the truck into neutral before going into 4Low.

What they said. For all ppl that own a 4wd and never take it offroad you need to lock it in every couple of weeks. Not only to make sure it works, but to keep everything lubricated.
