Default 1998 Automatic gear shift lever

I bought a '98 F150 4x4 about 6 monthe ago and have been slowly but surely fixing things that are broke with all of your help.
Thanks everyone that has helped me in the past!!!!!!!!
Now for the next problem. And I have searched all over for the answer but no such luck.
When I bought the truck I had to put the trans. in N to start it. No big deal, at first. Now the shifter has so much slop in it that I am having a Time trying to start it.
The indicator is only right from D to 3. Foe P & N it is way off.

Is this an easy fix or do I neeed to take it to a shop?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

It's the neutral safety switch. I would suspect one of 2 things. the bushings on the bottom of the steering column that move the trans linkage are bad (easy fix) or it's the switch on the transmission. You should be able to start in park or neutral but if the linkage is not pushing the shift lever on the trans all the way back it won't start in park. Confirm by putting the lever in park and go under the truck, disconnect the rod at the trans and push it. You should feel it move 3/16 of an inch. Then try to start the truck. If it works the linkage or bushings are your problem. If not it's the switch
