Default 06 Lariat soft pedal after pads changed

Just changed my front pads on my 06 Lariat crew cab and now have a soft pedal. Did not open any lines or bleeder valves. I did pump the pedal between doing each side and had a good pedal but when I crank the engine I get a soft pedal. No codes showing up. What can I do? What did I do wrong ? I have looked for an answer all over this blog but cannot find one with the same problem.

What am I thinking. Nevermind. Did you pump the brakes while the pads were off?

Carefully inspect all the brake lines for leaks, soft spots & cracking in the rubber sections.
If the lines check out good-
Get a mityvac http://www.mityvac.com/pages/products_hvpo.asp & change the brake fluid. Brake fluid absorbs moisture & over time becomes less effective. Unless there is some other issue in your brake system, this will give you a better feel in the pedal.

If you have 4 wheel abs you need to do a service bleed on the HCU. Have to use a scan tool with that option. I've seen some cheap ones on ebay but can't vouch for any other than a genuine Ford VCM or NGS.

Thanks Rnolcomp. I done plenty of brake jobs in my time but have run across two of these recently with 4 wheel ABS. I have a Innova Equs 3140 scan tool will it do this ? Thanks for your help. I'm not on a computer often because of my job.

Just checked it and the innova 3140 doesn't have abs capability. Over the last few days the pedal had tightened up a little. I maintain/pm my vehicles so there are no leaks or broken lines or stuck calipers. Must be the ABS is overiding the function.

Having the same issue due to doing the same brake job steps (never opened the system just pushed the pistons back) Pedal has been very soft for 3 days now with no sign of improvement. What was the fix? I dont have the scan tool and trying to avoid a trip to the dealer. Thanks for the info!
