04 Lariat - Overdrive gone!
Hey guys, noob but hoping you can help me!
Got an 04 Lariat SuperCab 2WD, 5.4 Triton, floor-mount shifter. 37,000 miles on the clock, LPG conversion. Just today I've lost overdrive!
Seems that when you pull away strongly, no problem. But when it reaches a decent cruising speed (45 and above) it would normally switch into overdrive, but now it just revs like it's slipping or selecting neutral. If I disable OD, then I've got 1st-3rd, but revs are obviously higher. Definitely no good when you're travelling long distances and petrol is £1.15 a litre (about $9 a gallon!!!) If you haven't guessed, I'm in the UK.
Also, if you manually downshift to 2nd when decelerating, it doesn't engage, even when it's well within the speed range - strangely a manual downshift to 1st works OK. Like I say, everything was fine until this afternoon after I pulled away from some lights - and no, I wasn't racing!
Please tell me it's something simple like a fuse or small electrical problem - I dread to think what I'll be charged if the trans has to be dropped out...

**UPDATE**
Just for everybody's info, I had the trans rebuilt by a local auto specialist here in the UK - turns out it was failure of a couple of valve assemblies that control the OD and 2nd downshift.
Basically the valves open and close at a rate of 20-30 cycles a second, and they wore themselves loose in the valve body (they're steel, mounted in the alloy body) - needed oversize valves to fit tight in the worn body, otherwise it would've needed a complete valve assembly!
In the end it cost me a darn sight less than that, but even so, it amounted to the US equiv of $1900. Crappy design in my opinion, but without these great trucks in large numbers over here, I've got my hands tied. Bugger.
