My 2004 5.4L sounds like a diesel at idle. I wouldn't necessarily call it a knocking noise but I can't figure out where it's coming from. I took it to my dealership and they said it was the cam phasers. I've read a lot of mixed reviews on this. Some people say it's normal for those model year trucks and others say it needs further investigation. The truck runs fine other than that noise which just annoys me. Any information or advice would be appreciated. thank you!

Pretty normal - do a search on here for cam phazers. Not always a problem, more of an annoyance (depending on the severity), can usually be corrected by replacing the phazers and/or solenoids.

My 04 Lariat sounds the same. It's the cam phasers. I am looking to possibly doing a phaser lockout kit. Put new timing chains, tensioners, solenoids, and oil pump. Been researching parts costs all week.
