I understand what Tejasandre was saying on how to drill the holes and whatnot, yes that will definitely work without any issues.
What I would like to do is actually have a hole big enough for the thread rod or bolt to go through and somehow have a washer on the backside of the bed between the cab to act as a backer. Somehow I just don't see this happening, unless the bed is actually removed from the frame itself which I have no intentions on doing

so make the hole at the base big enough for your washer to fit, and then leave space to slide up? I'm sorry if i'm not helping. I am trying.

Hole on top , or outside is best is imagine. Could probably slide a washer in sideways...thinking.

I'm trying to figure out how I can get a "T-nut" attached to the rail of the bed.. Seems like going this route would work also

Nutserts in the lip, and use a regular bolt from inside the box.

Well the big box stores around me do not sell nutserts. They have in stock what is called a "Well Nut".
Basically looks like a big nutsert, but the outside part of the body is a hard rubber like material and from what I have read online it seems like it compresses this rubber material to do exactly what a nutsert does. but then when you take the bolt out of it, it goes back to its normal size.

Uhm. Not sure how thick the box is... but I'm upset I just thought about it... Rivets? Might be your best bet honestly.

Just got my nutserts from fastenal, 3/8" in size. Well, I went to drill the hole in the bed of the truck and it's about a 1/16" to 1/8" inch to big.
I tried to put tape around the nutsert to make up for the difference and it still turns inside of the hole that is too big.

And I screwed now or do I have to go up one more size on the nutsert and possibly drill the hole at tad bigger so it fits perfectly?
