Air duct to the filter box
I may just be ignorant on this issue so go easy on me. 2009 5.4L XLT
I bought it used so am not sure if any mods have been done. My concern was with the air filter box intake. Where air would flow into the box was basically closed off so very little air could get in. The side fender, rubber sheeting on all other sides was not allowing much air into that space. So I ran a 3" HVAC duct from the box intake down about 4' to in front of the radiator. The duct is definitely getting air now; however my concern now is: Is that extra 4' that the engine has to suck through hurting/offsetting what I had before? I could not tell a difference in driving with the 4' duct. Any legitimate ideas if I should take it off and put it back the way it was because it's causing the engine to work harder sucking that air into the air filter box? Again I just can't see how very much air was originally getting in the filter box because of the way it was encased. Another option: Should I remove some of the rubber skirting, which appears to have no major purpose, and take off the 4' duct? Or is my modification ok to leave? Thanks in advance.

Trying to figure it out!
If the little air it was getting was just from under hood it was probably hot air. . The air it is getting now will be cooler. I can't see the length being bad for the engine. You probably won't notice a gain in power just driving it, even most 'cold air intakes' don't give much more than a few hp.

I would agree with everyone else. I believe that you removed 7L1Z9F721A and basically installed a makeshift cold air intake. Keep an eye on the CEL and make sure that the hose doesn't get submerged.
