Selective Cruise Control
I was thinking about this again today, have not seen it anywhere else before, but mayhap I missed it.
Anyway - cruising down the interstate this morning, and came to the reduced speed limit sign where you're supposed to slow down to 55. I normally do that, if only to see the white knuckles on the tailgater in back of me.
Anyway, got to thinking: Cruise control is computer-controlled, right?
They know how to program things in the truck so that one tap means something, two taps means something else (think tow/haul-Sport, for example)
So, why not have the ability to set one tap to turn on CC, then preset two taps to a desired speed, three taps to another speed. That way I get on the I-state, and three taps gets me to 65 or 70, or whatever *I* set it to, and when I come to a 55 zone, two taps backs it down to 55 or so.
That way I'm not watching the speedometer, waiting for the speed to drop while holding the button, nor am I hitting my brakes to slow it down. Seems do-able to me.
Where am I going wrong?

that does not sound practical, at all... brakes / gas, or +/- seem to work just fine...

So does the tuning **** on the radio, and the tire pressure gauge in my glove compartment, the manual off-switch on the headlights, etc. Just thinking of another convenience I thought would be neat.

Mercedes has a version of that. Tap up for +5 down for -5. So it does exist in a form.

all I do is count the amount of taps. If I hit decel 10 times in a row quickly it'll reduce the speed 10 mph. Same when going back up to speed. It works fine, no looking at anything but the road.

This. Although I'm not sure all option packages include dial-a-speed cruise control. Back in my day, you had to hold the coast button down until you reached the desired speed, then let go. Tapping the button did nothing, really.

I used to have a '58 Olds 98 that had a "Speed Minder" feature on the speedometer. Set a needle to any speed, and it would buzz if you went past that speed. Not a control, just an indicator.

The new Mini Coopers do this ... I had one as a loaner, and you would tap for +/- 1, and press for +/- 5 ... or it was backwards from that, but either way, it worked. I liked that feature.
