Default Oil change intervals

Are you going to rely on the truck to tell you when to change it or are you going to change it at 3,000 or 5,000 miles?

Every vehicle I've owned I've had it changed at 5000 miles so this possible 10,000 mile before oil change sounds strange to me.

On page 518 of the 2015 F150 Manual it states the following:

"Your vehicle is equipped with the
Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor system, which
displays a message in the information
display at the proper oil change interval.
This interval may be up to one year or
10000 miles (16000 kilometers)."

then on page 521 it states the following:

"Your vehicle is equipped with an Intelligent
Oil-Life Monitor that determines when you
should change the engine oil based on how
your vehicle is used. By using several
important factors in its calculations, the
monitor helps reduce the cost of owning
your vehicle and reduces environmental
waste at the same time.
This means you do not have to remember
to change the oil on a mileage-based
schedule. Your vehicle lets you know when
an oil change is due by displaying ENGINE
OIL CHANGE DUE or OIL CHANGE
REQUIRED in the information display."

My wife's 2011 MKX tells her when to change the oil. So far so good. I'll do the same.

When I purchased my '15, my dealer said that Ford includes 4 oil changes for the first 30K miles (every 7,500 miles). I'm not planning on waiting that long for the first one, so I'll have them do the first one on my dime at 3,750 miles. I'll then let them do it at 7,500.

Previously I've always changed the oil at 5k, but for the new F150 I'm going to go by the oil life indicator. Figure that will probably save me a a few bucks a year to boot + less time spent on maintenance.

I have a 2005....almost wish I had something like that as I drive less then 4k miles a year
I don't really like going over a year between oil changes
But have always wondered if I am "wasting" oil

I have always switched to mobile1 synthetic as soon as Iget the vehicle home from the dealer. This oil sensing unit may not like that.

Anyone know more about the oil type ford uses and/or if the sensing unit can be told what it has in it?

I have a 2013 and I just go til the computer tells me. First oil change was at 15,000kms. Got it done and the oil was still good. I've been running full synthetic since the first change and I've had no problems with following the computer guide. Anyone who tells you to change your oil every 3-5k is lying. That's a waste of money and you're throwing out good oil. I could send you links to lots of proof etc but just do what your truck says. That's why it's built in there. If you do some off roasting or leave your truck idling for long periods of time just change it a bit before. I had my 40 k service done the other day and I still had 24% life but I just asked them to change it because I was there. If you pay attention a lot of these lube shops will tell you you can get 8-10k out of synthetic then they put a sticker on your window to change it in 5. Money grabber. Don't waste your money and pollute when you don't need to.

Oh and my 40k service was flawless.

Best of luck ! And congrats on the truck

My guy @ Ford recommends Mobil 1. So stick with what you're doing. They say either go motorcraft or Mobil 1

Great, the daily "when do you change your oil" discussion which leads to the "I don't follow the manufacturer's recommendation discussion", all prompted by "the OP's inability to read prior posts discussion"...
