Oil change - anyone done their own yet?
I'm getting ready to change my truck's oil for the first time tonight, and need to know if there is a gasket for the oil pan bolt or not. If so, I need to stop at the dealer's parts department on the way home. Thanks.

I haven't changed mine yet but all the cars I have done required one but the one on the truck may still be good for another oil change but if you insist on a new one just call the dealer and ask if they have them.

Why, when the dealer does an Motorcraft synthetic blend oil change, and lots of other services, including tire rotation and a hand wash, for $40? (Platinum Service)
I'd assume o-ring, not a gasket, but I have no real idea.

I changed my own a few days ago.
The wide open hole under the bumper makes accessing the filter infinitely easier.
No, there's no gasket or crush washer, or o-ring - there's nothing on the pan plug.

And dealership wash? No thanks. I'd rather not have to spend my time removing swirls from my paint.

There are several reasons why, none of which are relevant to the question I asked. But, quite bluntly - I trust myself more than a dealership service station or quick lube type place to do regular maintenance things. I've been burned a couple times on oil changes, and just sleep better at night knowing it's done right. And, I enjoy doing it.

I can't agree with that more.

I just made the biggest mess of removing the oil filter. I tried the baggie trick and failed miserably. Huge puddle in the driveway. Took longer to clean that up then the rest of the oil change. I now have to go back and scrub as best as I can.
I installed a Fumoto valve with a attached hose on it so, in the future, I don't have to pull the sound shield.
I need to work on my oil filter technique though.

Many folks take satisfaction in performing inspections and maintenance on their possessions. They may even mow their own lawns, wash their own windows, and carefully select the engine oil formulations that they add to their engines.
