My impression of the 3 engines after test drive.
Decided to upgrade from my 2005 f 150 ext cab 5.4. Stopped by dealer a few days ago. First up was 2.7 in scab with 3:55 rear. I pulled off the lot and within 1/2 mile my impression was there was no way I'm spending 40k for this. It had tons of lag and no feel of any power. I expected this to be the engine of choice because I was interested in fuel economy. Next was 5.0 crew with 3:31. All i could do was smile. Some have complained thats its low end is a little slow but it was just fine for me. I absolutely loved the feel of the it and the sound. It felt like a real truck to me. It made me want to buy one on the spot. Last was the Eco 3.5 on crew 3:31. Didn't do it for me. Power didn't feel any better than 5.0 and sound was less than impressive. I didn't expect to b in love with the 5.0 but thats what happened. I'm glad I tried them all out. Now I'm shopping for the best deal. Good Luck.

If you're referring to the 2011-2014 5.0, there are some minor changes. New exhaust manifolds, cam, and intake to give it the increase in power.

The results are just what I would expect.
It would be fun to now do the same test drive with a moderately loaded trailer in tow.

Instead of beefing up the EcoBoost, Ford engineers focused their attention on the 5.0L V8 for the 2015 F150 and the result is quite impressive. Where the current (2014 and earlier) F150 with the 5.0L v8 offers just 350hp and 380lb-ft of torque, the 2015 5.0L V8 packs 385 horsepower and 387lb-ft of torque. This extra power comes from a new intake manifold design, a new camshaft setup and new exhaust manifolds, which also allows the 2015 F150 equipped with the 5.0L V8 to boast the highest payload capacity in the half ton truck segment by a massive margin. The 5.0L won’t tow quite as much as the 3.5L EcoBoost, but the new V8 will haul the weight of a Corvette ZR1 in the bed. The 5.0L is also capable of towing 11,100lbs.
That's right folks, the highest payload rating belongs to F-150's with a 5.0 not the 3.5 EB. Kidding aside, we are splitting hairs here. Get what you think is best for you. To the OP, thanks for your review.

This is about the only review I've read to date that says this about the 2.7EB. The 2.7EB I drove was a SCrew with 3.31 rear and had the same ***** as a 5.0 off the line minus the engine sound. I figured a lighter truck with higher gears would seem better. Interesting view point.

Strange how different folks have different opinions about seat of the pants test drives with different engines.
I did the exact same thing back in Dec and have a totally different opinion on that!
After my drives I immediately knew I was ordering the 3.5 EB. Had no preconception which engine I would get, just wanted the one that felt the most powerful.
The 5.0 kept down shifting to keep the RPMs up which was driving me nuts. The 3.5 stayed in high gear on a hilly road the whole time. I was blown away. I had the cruse set on all vehicles and on the same road. The 2,7 was close to the 3.5 had to feel much difference but some.
