Exclamation Max Tow can be cheaper/better deal than Trailer Tow Package

I was looking on at Ford's "local inventory" site, it shows vehicles that are on order. A lot of dealers order the trailer tow package and the 3.55 e-locker, which comes with less, yet costs more than Max tow for their 3.5EB trucks.

The max tow costs $300 more, includes everything in the normal Trailer Tow Package, and includes the following upgrades for 2017:
  • 3.55 axle e-locker
  • Thicker frame .1" vs .087" rail thickness
  • 36Gal tank (included as of 2017)
  • Brake controller
  • Higher towing capacity

This picture is from a local dealer; it shows how this particular dealer ordered a pickup that cost $840 more than it should have. This is a worst case scenario as they ordered it with all the same equipment as the max tow. It also has less towing capacity and costs more. To me this shows that this dealer didn't know what they were doing. Sadly from what I saw, most of the dealers order their trailer tow packaged with the 3.55, which is still a $170 more than the Max tow.

My 16 XLT SCAB 2.7 4x4 FX4 has rails that are .117 thick
Has everything that a Tow Package has but not noted on window sticker
Not Max Package has a 3.55 diff

Interesting, the data I got was from the Fleet Manual. I wonder if they just started using the same frame for all of them? Granted the specs I got were from the 2015 Fleet information: https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas...tes_010815.pdf

SuperCrew 4x4 157:
8 9.06 x 3.58 x .1 (HD)
9.06 x 3.58 x .11 (HPP)

SuperCab 4x2 164:
8 9.06 x 3.58 x .087 (LD)
9.06 x 3.58 x .11 (HD/HPP)

I am not a mechanical engineer, though I did take some classes as electives in college. I wonder if those thousandths of an inch are within tolerances for Ford?

I bet the specs you're looking at are the thickness of the bare metal of the frame. I would imagine the tolerances are rather tight for that. Where the variability comes in is the thickness of the paint and/or other coatings on the finished product.

I guess I'm missing something. (This is my first truck.) I have the max tow and the 36 gallon tank.
