I see you guys commenting on how you ordered your truck...is that like build your own? Do you do it at the dealership?

Yep. Figure out what you want, spec it out on Ford's build-your-own website, print it out, and bring it to the dealer (or dealers) of your choice. They'll all try to sell you something on their lots, or perhaps even try to find the truck you want on another dealer's lot (likely one out of state), but if they can't do that, then they'll order one for you.

I just did it. Shopped the same truck around to half a dozen dealers in the Twin Cities, picked the one with the best combination of price and non-a--hole sales person. Actually found a pretty good guy.

Now only about 4 weeks to go...

Ok cool, so I see Ford's site will give you the net price and then the different dealers will tell you how much they would actually charge you?

I went straight to the fleet department and sat with the fleet manager. Very straight forward and they are not sales people so they are not pushy and don't play any games. (At least that was my experience).

It sort of depends on how the various dealers approach it, but yeah, that's generally how it works. It helps if you're prepared with more information about pricing than just the price that comes up on ford.com, of course. Once you have configured your truck, you can "build" the same thing on sites like Edmunds.com, where you'll see not only the retail price (which should be close to what you see on Ford.com) but you'll also see the dealer invoice price, information about dealer holdbacks, various rebates and financing offers, and other information that dealers may or may not choose to share with you.

The best piece of advice is just to stay very detached during the whole process. Just tell the dealers to give you their best price, and compare & contrast. Don't get emotional about it.

What he said... Don't deal with the floor people.. The fleet guy is the way to go ... When you figure out what you want via the build your own site, print it out and take it to your dealer... When the lot lizards attack you tell them you want to ORDER a truck... In most cases they will point you to the fleet guy.

Lolwut. I'm a "floor person" and when somebody tells me they want to factory order a truck, I say "great! Let's go take a look at how you've spec'd it out and I'll get it in the system ASAP!"

It takes me 5 minutes to do up a factory order form. It's not rocket science. I design it in my DMS system and then write down the option codes on the order form, walk it up to the controller and when I get the order number I check COTUS daily and if there are any changes I call the customer and provide them with periodic updates and when it arrives, I snap photos and send them while the vehicle gets prepared for the sale.

But thanks for combining all of us "floor people" into one large group who don't know anything about anything. Those of us who do our jobs properly are the ones who have long-lasting relationships with our customers. Those who don't know how to do their jobs or who don't put the effort in are the ones who sit on the revolving door side of the showroom.
