The smart move would be to put away that extra income and pay cash for exactly what he wants when it's time to buy the next truck.

Seems you have already talked yourself into this. Just go do it.
I would never own this truck without the moonroof. One of the best features.

I do the same with cars nearly every year ... paid cash for my Cadillac ATS-V, but finance the commuter car (BMW) and the payments are run through my wife's work. The point in my posting all this is that it largely depends on one's financial makeup and how you structure everything from a tax standpoint.
My company owns my truck and yes its a terrific write off. The tax code is written that way to stimulate the economy. But its still money out of your pocket at the end of the year and trading a new truck for a year newer will never pencil no matter how you justify it. Do it if you want to and you can afford it but not because it makes financial sense.

The price for the 2016 Lariat isn't excellent, but not bad either. $11k off MSRP on a Lariat is a pretty good deal. Could you get better? Yes. But who's to say that better deal has all the options you want? And the fact that they're giving you $32k for your truck is really good. Out of curiosity, I had the Ford dealership I bought my truck at value my truck for trade in. They said somewhere around $29k-$30k. I have a 2016 XLT FX4 almost fully loaded!

I definitely can't fault you for what you're considering. I didn't do my due diligence when I bought my truck and now there are a few things I wish I had gotten (sport, console, 6.6' bed, to name a few), thanks to this forum haha. I briefly considered doing what you're doing on a 2017 Lariat. Would it have been an awful decision financially? HELL yes, but it's my money and I'll enjoy it as I please.

We wait until a deal presents itself. That means beating the pavement, crap loads of emails, phone calls and time. My last two truck deals happened to be on leftovers. Chances are, the 16s will be ripe for rebates and deals in the next couple of months, which may be significant depending on inventory.

You're imposing a significant tax upon yourself that most of us can't quite comprehend. Perhaps make your dealer aware that he/she needs to work harder for your business. Good luck, hope it works out well for you either way.

If you can afford the obvious financial hit at least wait and get the 17 with gen 2 EB. That would be something to get excited about over the 5.0. Besides I wouldn't trade a old new truck for a new old truck no matter what the deal.

Looks like a fantastic price, for the '16 to me! That what I paid, minus the 502A package. But, I think that you're really taking a bath on your trade.

Well i could have paid cash for the 2015 when i bought it but i got .74% financing for 36 months so its costing me 500 bucks to use some else's money. With my money i paid off my house free and clear and I'm not married so i dont have that drain on my bank account. So to the douche who said my wife holds my wallet, there ya go. I bought the truck 11months ago so i think paying it down 12k in 11 months is pretty good. If i did this deal I'd add about 200 to my payment and start over again for another 36 months. I'm pretty specific on what i want. When i bought the xlt i researched the xlts only. Then i got on this forum and learned about the lariats and how everything is different. I mean even the sunvisors are different. Its really a whole different truck. I can wait for 2017s but then my trade will be even worse off than it is now. At least now i am getting 4k more than i owe on it. I'm still pondering. As much as i want it, I'm not in a hurry. If they sell it, they sell it.

How much can i actually expect to get for my xlt? I don't think 34 with tax savings is that bad.

That seems realistic. Has to be cheaper than new ones for someone to buy it.

Go get that new one!
