Current SYNC 3 and CarPlay/Android Auto Information
UPDATED – 4/27/17
TO MY KNOWLEDGE FORD HAS RELEASED VERSION 2.2 TO ALL FORD VEHICLES. PLEASE CHECK THE FORD OWNER SITE FOR YOUR UPDATE (http://owner.ford.com/) , LET IT UPDATE VIA WIFI OR VISIT YOUR DEALER.
I wanted to get something written up for those 16+ SYNC3 owners to have some quick reference to. In regards to CarPlay and Android Auto…YOU MUST HAVE YOUR PHONE CONNECTED VIA USB.
SYNC 3 Version Releases
Version 1.0 - Initial Release Version - Does not contain Android Auto/CarPlay
Version 1.1 – Early update for Version 1.0 to correct minor bug issues
Version 2.0 - Only available on late build models of the 2016s (roughly July 2016). Version 2.0 is the first build to contain Android Auto and CarPlay. This is also standard on early build 2017 models. Please note if you have a 2016 model you will need a new CarPlay compliant USB hub to utilize CarPlay. No way around it.
Version 2.2 build 16280 – This was initially released as an update for some 2016 Lincoln models in Dec. 2016. In Feb. 2017 I noticed that most Fords/Lincolns were being shipped from the factory with 2.2 in them. Version 2.2 does contain CarPlay/Android Auto. This has been referred to as hacked, leaked, etc. This is a legitimate release. It just wasn’t released for all models.
Version 2.2 build 17011 – This is the widely released update for SYNC3 (as of late April 2017). This is what will be available for your vehicle via the owner site/WIFI update/Dealer update if your vehicle qualifies for it. THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD BE INSTALLING.
You are able to check your version by going into the General icon and then ABOUT menu item. The version is listed at the top and not to be confused with gracenote or navigation version. If installing by USB it seems SYNC3 is very picky with what type of USB flash drive is used. It is hit or miss as to if the system will like your USB flash drive. My suggestion is if the installation fails do a master reset and use a different USB flash drive. REMEMBER FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE OWNER SITE FOR USB INSTALLATION.
If further information pertaining to this topic is received I will attempt to update this original thread. I would like to ask that opinions about Apple versus Android be kept out of this and the keep the topic on task.

THIS UPGRADE IS FOR NORTH AMERICAN 2016 FORD/LINCOLN MODELS WITH SYNC3 V1.0 OR V 1.1 FACTORY NAVIGATION ONLY.
THIS WILL UPGRADE FROM VERSIONS 1.0/1.1 TO VERSION 2.2
THIS IS USED AT YOUR OWN RISK AND YOU TAKE ALL RESPONSIBILITY FOR ITS USE
NAVIGATION MAPS DO NOT GET UPGRADED WITH THIS UPDATE
This has been tested on 2016 F150, Edge and Mustang along with Lincoln MKC.
A new HUB is ONLY required if you want to use CarPlay. It is not required to install the update.
ANYONE THAT HAS A CONVERSION THAT USES THE MFT/SYNC2 USB SHOULD NOT UPDATE AS THIS WILL RENDER YOUR USB USELESS AND YOU WILL NEED A NEWER SYNC3 USB HUB

Thanks for the information!
I'm a 2015 owner so I've got MFT, but I'm keeping up to date as I may move to Sync 3 V2 when all that gets sorted out. As far as I'm aware you can already upgrade and, as you said, it does require an APIM and screen.

EDIT: Looks like my questions were answered in another thread I just read.
I'm pretty sure I have version 1.0 on the truck I purchased yesterday.. If I wanted it right now, I'd have to go to dealer to get updated to 1.1, correct?
If I had 1.1, would that enable me to get 2.0 right now or would I still have to wait?

I wanted to get something written up for those 16+ F-150 Owners to have some quick reference to.
SYNC 3
Version 1.0 - Initial Release Version - Does not contain Android Auto/CarPlay
Version 1.1 - Latest Update (as of 10/11/2016) for Version 1 to correct minor bug issues (only available via dealer upgrade - I now have this available but it is a 500+gb download)
Version 2.0 - Only available on late build models of the 2016 F-150 (roughly July 2016). Version 2 does contain Android Auto (fully functional) and CarPlay (non functional)
You are able to check your version by going into the General icon and then About menu item. The version is listed at the top and not to be confused with gracenote or navigation version.
Version 1.X cannot be upgraded to version 2 at this time. The software release has not been made available from Ford. Ford is currently saying it will be ready by the end of 2016.
For those that have a 2016 Ford F-150 with V2.0 in it, the reason CarPlay does not work is because a CarPlay compliant USB hub is not installed in the vehicle. I have found that part # GJ7Z-19A387-B (part for 2017 MKC) is a CarPlay compliant USB hub that is a direct fit into the 2016 F-150. The backlighting is white instead of blue. Other USB hubs of the same design will likely work but at this time this is the only hub that has been tested to my knowledge and I can say gives the V2.0 SYNC 3 CarPlay. After some experimenting, the hub can be removed with a basic plastic trim tool without having to take anything else apart. Use a thin plastic pry tool and slide it under each side (short sides of the hub) and give it a little twist to get that side to pop out and then do the other end. You may need to hold the already released side out as it will want to pop back in.
Some additional information: You can replace the APIM in your F-150 if it has V1 with one that has V2. They are different hardware part numbers. A replacement has to be setup and programmed for your specific vehicle. This does work as I have done it. In theory those with 2015 F-150 that have MFT/SYNC2 should be able to "fairly easily" upgrade to SYNC 3. This will require a screen and apim replacement at minimum. Not a cheap retrofit and it would be based totally on personal preference.
Once Ford officially releases the V2.0 update for the V1 owners I am sure we will learn the official part # for the F-150 USB hub that is CarPlay compliant. Just be forewarned Ford has put out information that due to the hardware upgrade it will be a dealer visit upgrade only. I certainly hope they change their stance on that. Until Ford makes the announcement it is just guessing as to what the official route of upgrade will be.

Great post. I tried to wade through the mix of misinformation on the other thread to find anything out, but the drama made it difficult.
I just picked up my 2016 Platinum yesterday. I've confirmed I have v1.0 installed... I guess I'll be waiting to see which hub I'll need to get after the upgrade to v2.x becomes available to us early-build bottom-feeders.

Just came from the parts department and picked up the part that the parts guy is saying is correct. This is the one that said the B got superseded by the D. I doubt it is correct and told him that I would likely be returning it. Going from a 2 port usb to a 1 port usb and sd slot doesn't seem quite right for a 2016 Lariat with Sync 3 ver 1.1.

Thats for SYNC2/MFT...totally not right.
BTW...right from the ford parts site:
GC3Z-19A387-D
Mobile Phone Transceiver
With Navigation System ; Sync II
The parts person that looked that up needs some additional training.

I'm not sure he would survive the additional training. He's pretty old. I told him that I thought this was for sync 2, but I wanted to keep it to debunk any mystery about the D part. Hopefully anybody reading my previous posts about the D part will not go down this road. I'm going to return it and wait for the update to be pushed and the correct part # to be published by FOMOCO.
