Cooling fan behavior
#11
Mine with the 3.5 Eco does the same thing here in Texas during the summer. Cant tell you how annoyed I get because its so damn loud. I had a 2011 with the 5.0 and never had the fan noise that loud. Just one thing you cant change and have to live with.

Yeah, that's why I'm wondering about it. My 2010 truck had electric fans but never did this.

The other thing you will notice when the fans kick into high after a restart is that the temp gauge will show the actual temp in degrees above the gauge. If you blink, you will probably miss it.

I get that too sometimes. If you shut the truck off before the coolant goes down to 93*C and restart the truck, the rad fan will come on full blast to bring the coolant down. That's why I will let my truck idle down to 93*C before shutting down (totally overkill for a gasser, as I do the same for my diesel but also monitor EGT).

When you shut off your engine and the water stops circulating the water in the block absorbs more heat so the erngine becomes heat soaked. When you crank it after a short time the temperature is above normal operating temp thats why the fans ramp up. The reason they slow down so quick is because the cooler water from the radiator quickly circulates into the block and the temp sensor quickly falls into normal temp range.

There are many wireless OBD2 modules and Apps/programs that will do the same thing as well, but you will need a phone or a tablet to monitor the values.

I wonder why it isn't consistent though. The fans have only done this twice since I've owned the truck. It seems to occur quite randomly. I can make several stops on a given day where I shut off the engine for 10 minutes or so but the fans might do the full speed thing once.
I'm thinking it might also be a self test that runs every so often where it runs the fans at full speed to ensure they are working correctly.

I think you have just happened to catch it a couple times where its right at the peak of its heat soak. You could have a temp sensor acting up, but I don't think so.

Well while driving yesterday in stop and go traffic (101 F so pretty warm) my wife says "what is that noise?". She hears better than me. I turn off the ac and the radio and man that fan was screaming. Kept it up for over an hour. Never heard it do that before (2500 miles). Started it this morning and drove for about 30 minutes and wouldn't do it again but it was cooler out. Have driven it before in 100 + temp and never did it. Don't think that is normal?? Any thoughts??
