I've got a 2013 Lariat Ecoboost, and my truck now has about 22000 miles on it in just under two years of ownership. I've driven on two 3000 plus mile trips towing a 7000 pound trailer and have had no issues. I've had zero issues with the engine. I've changed the oil regularly with Mobil 1 and changed the air filter once, and that is the only maintenance I've had to do to it. I live in Colorado, and the truck has seen all the weather extremes that Colorado can throw at it and it has been extremely reliable.

Just some real-world experience to consider, I like both engine choices personally.

Before I ordered, I did some reading here and elsewhere about the 3.5EB and the 5.0. As anyone who reads these forums knows, for every good post, there were seven that were just uninformed conjecture. I've learned enough to know that they are both FANTASTIC engines and I think the 2.7 will be as well (have you seen the pistons in these things?). Reliability-wise, my biggest concern with the EB is the fuel diluting the oil, but I think running a full synthetic makes this much less of an issue. The turbos will fail eventually, but I bet with synthetic oil that will be long after the truck reaches 250K, plus a new turbo is only about $600, so it's not an issue either.

Anyway, I went and drove two otherwise identical 2014 Platinums to see which I preferred. I liked (and ordered) the 5.0 for one reason - I liked the feel of it better. It was smoother and more responsive, although the low-end torque of the EB was something I could quickly get used to really quick.

Being that I was custom ordering exactly what I wanted, I chose the V8. However, if I was out shopping for a truck and the one that they had on the lot was equipped the way I liked but had the EB instead of a 5.0, I would buy it in a second.

I was on the fence also because of the Turbo lag on the 3.5 Ecoboost> I drove a 2013 and a 2014 3.5 eco and I noticed some turbo lag, but the 2015 King Ranch I just purchased has zero turbo lag and this truck is fast. Look at the stats, most of the 2015's are being purchased with the Ecoboost engines. Both engines are fine, but I want the power at the low end and the 5.0 is not going to cut it for me. The smoothness factor between the 3.5 and the 5.0 is negligible so I would buy the 3.5

I have the v8 and if i lived in high altitude, i would go for the ecoboost for sure

The 5.0 makes more sense to me considering, you plan on keeping your truck for a long time, the 5.0 is "likely" to be more reliable for a longer time, and towing will be minimal. AND.....You won't have to embarrass yourself with the canned V8 sound, you will have the real deal!

I just purchased a 2013 Lariat and there were plenty of both the ecoboost and the 5.0. I am an old dog and I don't know jack about the ecoboost, but I know the V8 and it is straight forward, bulletproof, and should last a lifetime.

The cost for me was about the same but I went with what I know. What you get should be along the same lines.

This has been beat to death. The facts are, these engines BOTH have smal quirks and the 5.0 has it's own issues. Buyers will be very subjective in trying to support their decisions so you will get little objective facts here.

The 5.0 has far less torque and will not tow anywhere near as well as the Eco. So you decide if it's worth it to you to have the top of the line engine or the base v8. Most are happy with their purchase of either. But one has a material performance edge.

Lol well you would say that because you have the Eco.
You're right both engines have pros and cons but the 5.0 is supposed to have more hp and it sounds way better. Speaking just about performance, I think there's way more power gains to be had with the 5.0 via aftermarket.
I love my ecoboost and it flies, the 3.5 in my dads 15' is an animal as well... And I've driven the 15' 5.0 too, not nearly as much torque but it's still powerful and that coyote definitely howls.
