Is there vertical room for such a weight to drop enough for retraction distance? If so, and if the weight would not bang around inside the console and be annoying then this could be brilliant.

Another option instead of using a weight may be to use a small retracting cable (not the usb cable itself but rather just a pull cable - think like a key chain or door badge retractor) attached low in the console and then to the usb cable at the furthest point it would extend (on the inside of console) - the retractor creates a bit of the tension to pull it back but would not have a loose weight that may hang up or bang around

There is a large void directly where it drops. But have to admit I hadn't thought of the weight banging around. Thats enough of a reason for me to go another route. I like the retractable keychain piece idea, great idea.

Check out a company called "Gear Keeper". They make a bunch of various retracting gadgets at various retracting tensions that likely will hold up better than a $1 key chain retractor

If gear keeper has one that doesn't retract so hard and fast that would be ideal. Wouldnt want to damage the cord by retracting to hard and coming to an abrupt stop.

I did something similar to this in my 2013, and plan on doing it again in my 16. Instead of coming out behind the gearshift I'm going to do the same as my 13 and have it come out above the head unit, in front of the middle speaker. Thanks for the advise on opening that section up.

I'm in Canada. Doesn't get that hot very often. I have used a suction cup mount on my windshield for 3 years now with no issues.

No problem. Good luck and try to post a pic once you finish. I'd like to see that once done.
