I have had my unplugged in the opened position for a while now and have not seen a bit of difference in mileage. I feel it's just another gimmick. But just my opinion...

A gimmick nobody notices but which adds complexity and costs while apparently not delivering any mpg benefits - surely Ford would add that...

The intercooler shutters open on demand pretty much in sync with the turbos. I don’t know what the main shutters were doing at the time, but I have access to another camera and if I can figure out a way to mount the camera to the upper part I ‘ll do another video. This isn’t edited at all and I tried to do some narration but it is hard to hear – I had the wrong back on the camera. Next time I’ll put the open back on. Sorry about that! Enjoy! Thanks for taking the time to do that, really cool to see the shutters in operation!

Active shutters have been in use for years since the 1940s on heavy duty trucks to help control engine temps. also used on aircraft reciprocating engines to control temps and aerodynamics [cowl flaps] So its just finding its way into light truck and car mkt. as a way to help meet ever tighter government regulation.

Interesting how on last gen f150's with the ecoboost. Dealers were threatening to not warranty issues if you even had a small grille in the intercooler opening. Now, it looks like the shutters were closed almost the entire time except at WOT. ?

Is there active shutters in front of the lower heat exchanger? I thought there is only shutters in front of the engine rad.

Edit: just saw the video and there is shutters on the lower intercooler

My favorite thing about the shutters is how fast the engine warms up in the winter. It takes no time at all to get warm air out of the heater.

guys one reason for it... Ecoboost engines

The intercooler for years reeked havoc on the previous gen because the IC was open right there at the bottom, just like a diesel... but unlike a diesel, it wasn't as big and the condensation would sometimes get sucked in, causing a limp situation.

Ford then tried fixing this throughout the years by adding shields to make the IC way less effective, and then decided: lets relocate it where it can be "hotter" meanwhile use louvers to adjust the air flow to get it hotter faster, to prevent this condensation issue.

we guys on the other hand are stuck drilling our intercooler to blow out this oil/water soup.

That is weird for them to shut off cool air to the intercooler, that just goes against all theory of having cool air to cool your boost charge at all times, and for it to only open at WOT. That is the first thing I would do is disconnect that plug for the lower louvers if you can.
