Default 8 speed auto on 2015?

I just noticed that on Edmunds, an 8 speed "shiftable" transmission is listed as the trans for the 2015 3.5
Anyone else notice this?

Yeah, I saw that too...that's got to be a typo, like the reports of 2.7 & 3.7 V8 engines. And, what's with the "shiftable" transmission? Sounds like the author was writing from a meet market after too many Friday after-work martinis. Perhaps he/she was of the Dynaflow era and never got caught up.

He might be referring to the select shift.

Yup...with various automotive articles forecasting 8 & 10 speed auto (aka SelectShift) transmissions in future F150 models, you've likely nailed it.

I know that Ford & GM are collaborating on a 9 & 10 speed transmission. I don't think I have heard anything about an 8 speed though.

I had only read about the joint GM-Ford 9-10 speed tranny until I Googled the 8-speed today...lots of links to discussions of such, but...validity? Some articles appear outdated and/or very speculative.

That would be a CVT transmission.

As an engineer in the automotive industry actively working on developing the components for said transmissions, I can't legally talk about them. But I will say, 6 speeds are soon to be a thing of the past. You just won't see 8, 9 or 10 speeds on the 2015's

Well, transmission secret guy, for some time it's been common knowledge that Ford & GM have been jointly working on a 10 speed. From everything I've read and heard, Ford/ Gub'ment Motors tried frantically to come up with a 10 speed to trump RAMs 8 speed. They failed to bring a viable unit and ran out of time before the release of the 2015. I'd look for it next year though. By 17 at the latest. You don't need to be an industry insider to surmise that.

RAMs 8 speed behind 395 hp/410 ftlbs Hemi with 3.92 gears is something every truck guy should experience for themselves. It's nothing short of AWESOME. Ford knows this and I'm sure they are kicking themselves for missing this opportunity to launch their newly redesigned flagship vehicle with something other than a lame 6 speed.
Ford needs to get to the table. Ford would also do well to get out of the R&D business with Gub'ment Motors. I'm not really sure what Ford is thinking with that deal???
