With such a large gear spread you can still have a high performance motor with torque available in the lower gears but then have several overdrive gears for cruising and better MPG.

GM's new SAE j2807
Scary stuff the GM 6.2l can now tow 12,000lbs with a 3.42.
This is what I mean by Ford having to step it up..... No BS loyalty it does not cut it the numbers are the facts...

I could see a better ratio between 4th and 3rd and 4th and 5th as beneficial for passing and hauling. 5th and 6th seem fine and no need to add here. 8 speed Passing with a drop from 6th to 3 1/2 would be nice for most passes and reduce RPM a lot I think !

9 speed ... 10 speed.. ? to many dam gears!! maybe it will be better but i cant see how or why. My truck will do 100 mph in 3rd gear. it has 6 !! why do we need so many gears?
With rapidly escalating CAFE standards across the board, the larger motivation is increased fuel economy, but after having experienced the eight-speed transmission in the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500, we feel these transmissions can also greatly benefit driveability and responsiveness as well, especially in larger and heavier vehicles such as trucks and SUVs.

I'd love to see a real test someday gear for gear not like TFL where the The GM was in third while the others in second. I would love to see a gear for gear test. This is why I said Ford needs a more powerful motor to end this. It is unlike them them to do this unless it's all about economy now. And if you want something with more power it would be a diesel.
