With Compact Fluorescent (CFLi) Integrated lamps and LED lamps, heat isn't so much a problem in efficiency, but rather, with life. We've seen when developing these lamps, that heat will drastically shorten the life expectancy (maybe a quarter of expected life) of electronically ballasted lamps.

I work in the professional sector, so i'm not sure what the automotive and led group is doing, but i can do some poking around to see what Philips is coming out with.

What I get frustrated about is that they are only offering the LED headlights in the upper trims. LED's are cheap. They come standard on a $117,000 Corola but not on a $40,000 truck. I'm not just pointing out Ford. All truck makers are making a killing on us. You mean to tell me that on the $30,000 "work truck", it can't come with painted door handles, carpet, LED headlights, rearview camera, chrome/body color bumpers, and nice wheels but all that is standard on a $17,000 Corola? I know they want people to buy the more expensive models but this is getting sad.

Manufacturer margins (profit) on a Ford truck are estimated by analysts to be in the ~ 20% bracket while margins on the rest of the lineup are estimated at ~ 11%. The F150 is a cash cow for FoMoCo.

"To Ford, having the F-150 is akin to having an obscure, rich uncle die every single year, leaving behind a pile of cash. It’s a constant—pretending for a moment that the Ford Motor Company has an endless annual supply of faceless, loaded, and doomed extended family members—there to add icing atop the balance sheet in good years and help prop up the company in the bad years."
