Not sure what the heck the above rant is all about. The Cmaz "fiasco" was acknowledged to be a flawed / outdated EPA test methodology. They followed the EPA rules and the numbers came out wonky. This was all acknowledged by the higher ups at the EPA.

Please don't confuse the subject with facts...

While we are flogging the MPG horse, which choice returns better overall mileage boost? Driving w/o a tailgate, or having a tonneau cover over the bed? I have to think one of those 2 option reduces drag over an open bed with the tailgate latched...

Tonneau cover, then tailgate up. Tailgate down or removed actually makes it worse.

From the Link....from Ford Wind Tunnel tests

Ford remains tight-lipped about the F-150's fuel economy numbers, but it admits dropping the tailgate would increase drag by about eight percent ? and sandbag fuel economy. Even for older models without the fancy spoiler, you're hurting efficiency and lowering your gas mileage when driving with the tailgate down, argues Richards.

So there's your verdict, straight from the wind tunnel: Leave the tailgate up.
This was also tested by Mythbusters but not in a wind tunnel w/same result

Yes and it was tested many times before Mythbusters as well. Always the same result. Leaving the tailgate down for better mileage is just a long-standing urban legend.

Bakflip fibermax tonneau cover on with just the driver good (22-23 mpg at 70-75 mph). Add three passengers, lotsa luggage, two mountain bikes on the hitch, bad (18 mpg at 70-75 mph)!! Those are both taking separate 10 hr trips in similar temps and altitudes. 2013 EB SC 3.31 gear.

Ford has learned from the CMax Energi mileage fiasco. They have already secretly submitted a mileage to the EPA. It will be declared false next month. They will then submit a 10% lower mileage in December. The EPA will declare that false in January. Ford will then submit a 10% less mileage in February and that will test false by CR and the EPA. Finally in March they will go public with a mileage that is again 10% less. That will stand up until around June when 2015 buyers start posting mileages that are 10% less. By the 2016 model mpg stickers will be accurate.
I have no idea what the EPA numbers will be, but this latest article explains why they will be as accurate as technically possible.

If Ford fudges the numbers, (and EVERYONE will be watching, LOL), the publicity will be terrible.

The errors have put a chill through the industry, said EPA senior engineer Jeff Alson. "The automakers know there are serious ramifications if caught."
Here is how it is done.
