You are comparing old technology to new engines today. There have been improvements in timing and engine tech since then. He is trying to compare that an engine with 2 fewer cylinders and 1.5 less liters is producing similar power numbers as the current larger 5.0 engine.

I hope the Eco's hold up but the Eco's have to work harder than the 5.0's due to a lack of displacement. How that will hold up over time is to be determined.

The 5.0 with the 3.73s will boogy... That's all...

Just joined the forum. Have been tracking 15's and 16's for about a year now. Own a 2010 Ford Flex Ecoboost, so I am on the fence with the 5.0 vs EB decision. I have 172K trouble free KMs with my 3.5 and the Flex is no lightweight. Looking to upgrade when I have the cash! Thanks!

You can't really make a bad powertrain choice on these trucks. I myself went with the 5.0 w/ 3.73's. I traded my Mustang 5.0 w/ 3.73's, so it was fitting. With the added weight of the truck, I'm still surprised sometimes how quick it is.

Mileage on the eco's is terrible. We tow a small airstream all over the Colorado mountains, and at times- 10000' I wonder how an eco would do. But I don't want to put up with the terrible gas mileage the rest of the time. Buy the 5.0 while you can. Don't believe those who tell you the eco economy is good. They are liars or have never had the 5.0

Default 5.0

The last F150 I had was 2001 KR with the 5.4, and it was a beast of an engine. I got over 275K miles on it, never had a problem with it. when I traded for 2015 KR with the 5.0 it still had the original parts in it, water pump, starter, rad. hoses, alternator, shall I go on. Never had an oil leak, So I am going with past experience. Like the previous person, I tend to keep my truck a very long time, last one 14 years. Not convinced the EB with twin turbos will give me the kind of performance and reliability. So I hope ford does not make a liar outta of me with this 5.0. So far I am very pleased with this truck, kinda wish I had waited until 2016 with the new improvements, but what the heck.

My 2013 EB Platinum was a rocket until it wasn't... It tried to kill me a couple of times by going into limp mode when I was calling for full power to pass on a 2-lane highway in rainy conditions. The limp mode caused the cooling lines to both turbos to leak coolant. Cool technology, wicked fast engine but I don't think they're worked out all of the potential "issues".

After the cracked gaskets on the turbo cooling lines BS, I had it repaired and let Ford have it back on trade for a 5.0. It doesn't feel as fast as the EB was but snick it into "sport" mode and turn off the AdvanceTrac stuff and it's still pretty fun - plus no issues in rainy weather.

All of this. I wanted a motor with power but without the gimmicks like a turbo or cylinder shut-off. I drove a Silverado for almost 15 years and I would have gotten another one except for the multitude of horror stories about their Active Fuel Management engines failing all over the place. The EcoBoost has its share of recalls as well. I just wanted an old-fashion motor that works.
